Who Benefits if You Stay on Microsoft Dynamics GP vs Business Central?

October 16, 2026

Dynamics GP still works. That's what almost every client tells us when we talk about the choice to move to Business Central.

We agree – Dynamics GP does still work, we still support it and will continue to support it.

But then we ask one question that changes everything: will you save money by staying on Dynamics GP?

The answer is NO.

Once companies understand that the discussion about moving to Business Central gets a lot easier.

Who Actually Profits When You Stay on Dynamics GP

Here's something we say on the record because it's true and it needs to be said. Partners make more money keeping you on Dynamics GP. You have to call us to install updates. You have to call us when something breaks. You have to pay for the server, the IT support, the patching, the hosting. Every one of those costs flows through a partner relationship built around keeping Dynamics GP alive.

We do both Dynamics GP and Business Central at Dexpro. We're not trying to push you off a system that's working. But when a client asks us for a straight answer, there's no math that supports staying on Dynamics GP long term. The people telling you Dynamics GP is fine forever are often the same people whose business model depends on you needing them to keep it running.

The Real Dynamics GP End of Life Timeline

Let's talk dates, because this isn't a scare tactic, it's a calendar. Mainstream support for Dynamics GP ends December 31, 2029. Microsoft actually pushed that back from an original September 30, 2029 deadline so Dynamics GP customers could get one more full year end payroll and tax cycle before support ends. After that date, no more enhancements, no more regulatory or tax updates, no more general technical support.

Security patches continue on a limited basis through April 30, 2031. That's also when subscription billing and SPLA usage rights terminate. If you're on a Dynamics GP subscription license, you're required to stop using and uninstall the product after that date. Perpetual license holders aren't forced off, but they're running unsupported software from that point forward.

Some partners tell clients that Dynamics GP customers will stay on Dynamics GP forever no matter what. We disagree, and we're seeing it play out in real time. Renewals come in, we have the honest conversation about where things stand, and client after client who started the call saying "Dynamics GP works" ends it deciding to move. Every single one so far has chosen to move to Business Central once they see the real numbers.

What Moving from Dynamics GP to Business Central Actually Costs

This is where the fear of change usually loses to simple math. A Dynamics GP client current on their enhancement plan and renewal qualifies for the Business Central essential license at $56 per user per month. That's in line with QuickBooks pricing, for a product Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into.

Microsoft also gives you a steep discount when you add full CRM functionality, with AI features included, on top of your Business Central license. Depending on your tier, that add-on can run as low as $20 per user, a fraction of what the same CRM functionality costs as a standalone product. Run the numbers for your organization and the combination of ERP and CRM often lands close to what a single QuickBooks license would cost you today. Microsoft didn't just compete on price here. They made the decision genuinely difficult to argue against.

And the promotion that gets Dynamics GP customers to that pricing has already gotten less generous once. It dropped from 40 percent off to 30 percent last December. We wrote about how the current Bridge to Cloud 3 promotion works if you want the full breakdown, but the short version is that we don't know how long the current offer holds, and neither does anyone selling it to you.

Then there's what you stop paying for. No more server refresh every few years. No more Windows patching schedule. No more paying separately for the level of security Microsoft builds into the cloud by default. Clients often come to us needing to spend several thousand dollars on new hardware just to keep Dynamics GP limping along. That's money spent standing still.

Why Business Central Beats Dynamics GP on Speed and Access

Cost is only part of the case. The other part is what you can actually do once you move. Picture standing at an airport gate and a client asks for the last three transactions on a vendor. On Dynamics GP, that means connecting a laptop, logging into a VPN, opening the Dynamics GP instance, and running a SmartList query. Fifteen minutes if everything goes smoothly.

On Business Central, you ask the same question by voice from your phone. Thirty seconds, and Copilot asks if you want further analysis on top of it. That gap isn't a minor convenience. It's the difference between a system built for a desk in 2005 and one built for how people actually work now.

Business Central also connects natively to the tools you're already using. Approve a workflow from Teams. Open a transaction from Outlook. None of that requires custom integration work, because Microsoft built the connections directly into the ecosystem. The Dynamics GP enhancements you've been waiting on have also slowed. With less investment going into new Dynamics GP functionality, the gap between what Dynamics GP can do and what Business Central can do isn't shrinking. It's widening.

Make the Move Before the Decision Gets Made for You

We're not telling every client to move today. If you're running Dynamics GP with one or two users and it's doing exactly what you need, there's a real case for staying a while longer and keeping the transition simple when the time comes.

That's part of why we tell clients when they don't need to spend money right now instead of pushing a move just because we can. But for most businesses on Dynamics GP right now, the honest answer to "should I stay" has stopped being about whether Dynamics GP still works. It's about who benefits from you believing it always will.
